Training

Program Training and Best Practices Tobacco Cessation Counseling Training

Training to implement the SMART Moms or Smile SMART programs are available online at no cost and, for a negotiated fee, through live training sessions. Training is available for clinicians who would like to increase their knowledge of best-practices for tobacco cessation counseling even without implementing the Smart Moms or Smile SMART programs.  Details are provided below for those who would like to participate in training to implement either of these programs, or for professional and personal knowledge.   Please contact project staff to discuss live training opportunities for your clinic, organization, or practice.

SMART Moms Training and Best Practices for Tobacco Cessation Counseling for Pregnant Women

Middle Tennessee State University partnered with Marshall University, Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, to offer a clinical training web-based program for counseling pregnant smokers using the 5 A’s approach as part of the pilot SMART Moms/Smile SMART grant-funded project in 2014-2018. Training materials for those implementing the S.M.A.R.T.  Moms curriculum for those who wish to do this remain available and is the first part of the training process. The second part of the training process is a clinical training from Marshall University.  Please contact Marshall University at the link below to determine if credits remain available for CME or CEU purposes for those that complete the online clinical portion of the training.   The Marshall University training website remains open as of the last published update of this website in 2022.

Nurses or other health professionals who would like a certificate of completion, access the SMART Moms PowerPoint first, where you will be directed through the rest of the process.  The PowerPoint is available through the download link below and is the first step for the complete training.  The PowerPoint will direct you at the appropriate time to the clinical portion of the training located on the Marshall University website.  The clinical training is the second and final step in completing the full training.

                                                                           Training consists of:

  A.  A PowerPoint program for implementing SMART Moms and review of the implementation toolkit,

AND

 B.  Clinical training for implementing SMART Moms OR for professional and personal knowledge.

Continuing education units were previously offered through November 19, 2017 for physicians (2 CMEs) and through November 30, 2018 for nurses (2.4 CEUs).  Registered dietitians, certified health education specialists (CHES), and other health professionals were able to participate in the online training and receive a certificate of completion which could be submitted to an accrediting organization for consideration of CEU credits.

Thank you to the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University and Lynne Goebel, MD, FACP and Brenda Mitchell, MD, FACOG for partnering with us to provide continuing education for this initiative from 2014-2018. Should you wish to access the Marshall University site just for the clinical training, or to inquire about current availability of CME or CEU credits, click here to link directly.

Smile SMART Training and Tobacco Cessation Counseling for Dental Professionals

As part of the 2017-2018 pilot project, we are partnered with the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Tennessee Department of Health Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program to bring this exciting new training opportunity to dental providers.  Dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, and dental clinic office staff are all encouraged to learn more how to talk with their patients about tobacco cessation and creating a smoke-free environment for their families and loved ones. While the pilot project was completed and the grant ended shortly thereafter, training materials remain available.

While the pilot grant-funded project has ended, training materials remain available and are free to use.  Those interested may begin by reviewing the PowerPoint training materials and toolkit for implementation available as downloads below.  Additional content and resources are also available for a more in-depth presentation on oral health and tobacco, oral health and pregnancy, and tobacco and pregnancy.  For additional training and resources on pregnancy and tobacco, follow instructions above for SMART Moms.
